Works
or work= er'-gon
From ἔργω ergō (a
primary but obsolete word; to work); toil (as an effort
or occupation); by implication an act:—deed, doing, labour, work.
Rev.
2-3 the church and Judgment.. the word—works—is spoken a lot, maybe we should
look at it a little..
Matt
5:13 - Matt 5:16 (NKJV)
13“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor,
how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and
trampled underfoot by men.
14“You are the light of the world. A city
that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Nor
do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it
gives light to all who are in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that
they may see your good works and
glorify your Father in heaven.
Matt
16:24 - Matt 16:27 (NKJV)
24Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let
him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow
Jesus says that the “works” testify of who he is..
our testify of who we are!!!
John 5:35 - John 5:36 (NKJV) 36But I have a greater witness than John’s;
for the works which the Father has given Me to
finish—the very works that I do—bear
witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.
John 10:24 - John 10:25 (NKJV) 25Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear
witness of Me.
John 10:37 - John 10:38 (NKJV) 37If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38but if I do, though you do not believe Me,
believe the works, that you may know and believe that
the Father is in Me, and I in Him.”
Look at what the Word says
in John 17:20
- John 17:23 (NKJV)
20“I do not pray for these alone, but also
for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21that they all may be one, as You,
Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us,
that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22And
the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We
are one: 23I in them, and You in Me; that they may be
made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and
have loved them as You have loved Me.
Our works should show that we are one with the Father….Son’s of God.
John 14:10 - John 14:11 (NKJV) 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves
John 14:11 - John 14:12 (NKJV) 12“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who
believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works
than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
Works, we should be doing
works…Grace gets me into the kingdom and my “works” show that I live there.
Paul says that we should do
works befitting repentance.. repentance is not complete without works that show
it.
Acts
26:17 - Acts 26:20 (NKJV)
17I will deliver you from the Jewish
people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, 18to open their eyes, in order to
turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of
Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance
among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’
19“Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not
disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20but declared first to those in Damascus
and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then
to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.
Rom
2:2 - Rom 2:16 (NKJV)
1Therefore you are inexcusable, O man,
whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn
yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. 2But we know that the judgment of God is
according to truth against those who practice such things. 3And do you think this, O man, you who
judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape
the judgment of God? 4Or
do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not
knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5But in accordance with your hardness and
your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of
wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6who “will render to each one
according to his deeds”: 7eternal life to those who by patient
continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8but to those who are self-seeking and do
not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, 9tribulation and anguish, on every soul of
man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; 10but glory, honor, and peace to everyone
who works what is good, to the Jew first and also
to the Greek. 11For there is no partiality with God.
12For as many as have sinned without law
will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be
judged by the law 13(for
not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the
doers of the law will be justified; 14for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the
things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to
themselves, 15who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their
conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their
thoughts accusing or else excusing them) 16in the day when God will judge the
secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel
In Romans 10 it says that if you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth… you will be saved.. if we believe in our head but do nothing, no works, Are we saved? Did you see in the last passage about “practice”, ”continuance in doing” “works what is good”. looks like maybe we need more than head knowledge but there should be some proof of our heart beliefs.
Rom 3:27 - Rom 3:31 (NKJV) 27Where is boasting then? It is
excluded. By what law? Of works?
No, but by the law of faith. 28Therefore we conclude that a man is
justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29Or is He the God of the Jews
only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles
also, 30since there
is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised
through faith. 31Do
we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we
establish the law
We Establish the
Law… we must be doing something if we establish something…Actually this passage
is telling us not that we don’t do anything but believe. It is telling us that
the Jews who lived under the “Law” are not the only ones allowed to have
faith..but, faith works…..is measureable.
Rom
4:2 - Rom 4:6 (NKJV)
1What then shall we say that Abraham our
father has found according to the flesh? 2For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast
about, but not before God. 3For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God,
and it was accounted to him for
righteousness.” 4Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but
as debt.
5But to him who does not work but believes
on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for
righteousness, 6just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom
God imputes righteousness apart from works:
James
2:14 - James 2:26 (NKJV)
14What does it profit, my
brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15If a brother or sister is naked and
destitute of daily food, 16and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and
filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body,
what does it profit? 17Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18But someone will say, “You have faith,
and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my
works. 19You believe that there is one God. You do
well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20But do you want to know, O foolish man,
that faith without works
is dead? 21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the
altar? 22Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23And the Scripture was fulfilled which
says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of
God. 24You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
25Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also
justified by works when she received the messengers and
sent them out another way? 26For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Is this a contradiction? NO>>> Abraham did things that “proved” his faith in God and he showed no faith in the world. He did not do works that proved his conformity to the world but he obeyed the Father’s commands to him. He followed God’s voice, even to the willingness to sacrifice His son. HE did not follow man’s ways. He did works of Righteousness that proved his belief, not to get acceptance but as a result of acceptance and to show his belief or faith.
I am not saying we are saved by works.. but the proof of our salvation or faith is found in our works.
Rom
13:11 - Rom 13:14 (NKJV)
11And do this, knowing the
time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our
salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12The night is far spent, the day is at
hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. 13Let us walk properly, as in the day, not
in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and
envy. 14But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the
flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
I do not want to set aside Grace. I live by Grace but, I must not read into scripture what is not there. When it talks about works not getting you to heaven it is talking about obeying the Old testament commands given by Moses.. I do have faith works… or I have no faith..”Let us walk properly”…
Gal 3:5 - Gal 3:7 (NKJV) 5Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to
you and works miracles among you, does He do
it by the works of the law,
or by the hearing of faith?—6just as Abraham “believed God, and it
was accounted to him for righteousness.” 7Therefore know that only
those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.
Abraham listened
and obeyed and that produced something.. the Sprit “works” miracles “by the
hearing of Faith”. Listening and
obedience is needed to prove faith works…
Gal 5:22 - Gal 5:25 (NKJV) 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness,
self-control. Against such there is no law. 24And those who are Christ’s
have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25If
we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Let us “walk” we
are doing something that proves we have faith in Jesus.
Eph 2:8 - Eph 2:10 (NKJV) 8For by grace you have been saved through
faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9not
of works, lest anyone should boast. 10For
we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we
should walk in them.
Again we are
saved, “not of works” but “for good works” so we must “do” works to prove we
are not saved by works. What works, --- these, the works of the Holy Spirit and
Jesus who live in us!
Eph 3:20 - Eph 3:21 (NKJV) 20Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly
abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21to
Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations,
forever and ever.
Phil
2:12 - Phil 2:15 (NKJV)
12Therefore, my beloved, as you have always
obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out
your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His
good pleasure.
14Do all things without complaining and
disputing, 15that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God
without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you
shine as lights in the world
John 14:14 - John 14:15 (NKJV) 15“If you love Me, keep My commandments.
John 15:13 - John 15:14 (NKJV) 14You are My friends if you do whatever I
command you.
Col 1:21 - Col 1:23 (NKJV) 21And you, who once were alienated and
enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22in the body of His flesh through death,
to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight—23if
indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved
away from the hope of the gospel which you heard,
29To this end I also labor,
striving according to His working which works in me mightily.
Titus
1:15 - Titus 1:16 (NKJV)
15To the pure all things are pure, but to
those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and
conscience are defiled. 16They
profess to know God, but in works
they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good
work.
Titus
2:11 - Titus 2:14 (NKJV)
11For the grace of God that brings
salvation has appeared to all men, 12teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should
live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13looking for the blessed hope and glorious
appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14who gave Himself for us, that He might
redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own
special people, zealous for good works.
Titus
3:3 - Titus 3:8 (NKJV)
4But when the kindness and the love of God
our Savior toward man appeared, 5not by works of
righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us,
through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6whom He poured out on us abundantly
through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs
according to the hope of eternal life.
8This is a faithful saying, and these
things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God
should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men.
1
Pet 2:11 - 1 Pet 2:12 (NKJV)
11Beloved, I beg you as
sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the
soul, 12having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they
speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the
day of visitation.
Look at Revelation 2 and 3, Jesus talking to the churches, and see how many times he says “work or works”.. He who overcomes will inherit … that is works. We must not forget this “works” stuff and not get upset by it, we are saved by grace but , our faith is proven by our works. Grace is not to be trampled on.
Heb 2:2 - Heb 2:3 (NKJV) 1Therefore we must give the more earnest
heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2For
if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and
disobedience received a just reward, 3how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first
began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who
heard Him,.
we neglect our salvation when it does not show in our actions and “works of God”. Our works will stand or fall in the final hour. If they fall will we?
